This Lead Renovator RRP Initial Certification course is 8 hours in length and includes approved lead safety training and the required certification exam.

This training is conducted in English. To view training options in Spanish, please click here.

Any contractor performing qualifying renovation, repair, or painting (RRP) work on pre-1978 homes or child-occupied facilities must employ at least one Certified Renovator who has successfully completed this training.

Companies must also submit an application to register as a Lead Safe Certified Firm with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or the EPA-Authorized State in which RRP work will be performed.

This course is approved for purposes of certification under Section 402 of TSCA and/or EPA-Authorized State lead regulations for Lead-safe Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) work.

Need an earlier training date or more location options? Click Here to view our full schedule and all available locations. Unless you work in Alabama, Georgia, or Oklahoma, you can take the RRP class in any state to satisfy your individual 8-hour training requirement. Please note that if you do attend a course at a location outside of the state where you will be performing RRP work, additional reciprocity paperwork may be required by the state lead program to finalize your certification.

More about the RRP Lead Paint Regulations

Effective April 22, 2010, anyone who performs renovations, repairs, or painting in pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities must comply with the Lead RRP Rule. Individuals and firms that are not certified could face fines of up to $37,500 per day.

The Lead-Safe RRP rule applies if your project disturbs:
  • More than 6 square feet of interior painted surface AND/OR
  • More than 20 square feet of exterior painted surface

How Do I Get RRP Lead-safe Certified?

  1. Register and successfully complete this 8-hour lead certification course.
  2. Submit an application to EPA or EPA-Authorized state on behalf of your company (even if you're a sole proprietor). See below for details.
  3. Receive your certificate from class and your firm certificate, finalize any additional paperwork required by your state, and you are ready to get to work!

This course is provided by an accredited trainer who is approved by the EPA and/or EPA-Authorized lead program in compliance with all regulations in the state in which the course is being held.  It will satisfy the 8-hour training requirement for individuals to attain certification in Lead Paint Safety for Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP). Individuals who attend the course, participate fully in the hands-on activities, and pass the certification exam will receive a Certified Renovator certificate.

Firm Certification

Firms, including sole-proprietors, landlords, etc. must submit an application stating that they will be utilizing a Certified Renovator to perform lead-safe work. Your training provider will discuss all registration requirements during class, and will provide the necessary forms when applicable.

To perform RRP work in an EPA-Authorized State (ALDEGAIAKSMAMSNCOKORRIUTWA or WI): Firm registration must be processed directly with the applicable state lead program(s).

To work in all other states: Firm registration must be processed with the EPA via an online application. The EPA Lead-Safe Firm fee is $300, and it is valid for 5 years.

First, my nerves are already shot, but this 8 hour course is well worth it, great instructors, good atmosphere, and it was nice to relax and learn what I needed. I can say that if you have any questions just ask and the instructors tell you the same. 5 stars hands down, even through this crazed pandemic is keeping a lot of stuff held down, this facility is well worth the visit.

Overall it was a wonderful day during training for the RRP course, I was the only student which was very nice because, I felt like I got a little more out of the the training course than if I was in a class with a few other students. Toward the end of my course/day I received a Live video call from the CEO of Seagull training Mr. Jim. Wow I couldn’t help but think to myself how professional it was for him to take 4mins from his super busy day to speak to me and wrap up/conclude the Lead training course. I thought it was very nice of him to do that, because he didn’t have to and I’m positive he had a million other thing he could have been doing. The course was a long 8hrs with a 1hrs lunch, if there were two 15 min breaks during the day. Thanks you for the coffee to keep me going and sitting up straight. It was a very nice, well thought out, and the expert advice with hands on training will really help me succeed in this window and door replacement industry. Thank you everyone at the training class in Atlanta, GA and especially the Jim the CEO of Seagull Environmental Training!

Having done similar certification courses, I have to say that this experience, in terms of education and delivery was superior! I typically think of these as diploma mills. The information and format is one I wish I could take home and redo again and again. I already intend to take a follow up course that I was initially on the fence over. This was my 3rd time taking the class. 2010 was good, 2015 was a quick refresher & was ok, but 2020 was a very good learning experience. The video with Jim Stump giving a brief history of the damages that lead has caused in the US was an eye opener which helped set up the stage for needing lead to be removed from paint & gasoline & why lead dust & chips containment & clean-up is so important & helped make the class so much more informative & enjoyable. Hats off to setting this up in this manner. Esther was very knowledgeable on the subject & is very good at teaching when demonstrating with the hands on portion of the program. Thank you for providing this knowledge to the rest of us.
