Texas Lead Paint Removal - Steps to Get Your License Today

Below we will review the steps on how to become certified as a lead professional to properly remove lead in the state of Texas.

Texas Lead Abatement Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees, any company (including sole proprietors) offering to perform lead hazard reduction work must be a certified Lead Firm. A $1,030.00 fee is required to register/renew and is valid for 2 years. If your certification has been expired for less 90 days, there is a $1,530.00 fee. If your certification has been expired for more than 90 days but less than a year, there is a $2,030.00 fee - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Abatement Supervisor:

  1. Texas Lead Abatement Supervisors ensure that abatement in target housing and child-occupied facilities is conducted and completed according to the standards of 295.212; identify most appropriate action to eliminate lead hazards; must be available at all times during abatement; develops occupant protection plan; assumes duties of a lead abatement worker; prepares written abatement reports; and supplies and trains employees in use of PPE and supervises compliance.

  2. You must meet at least ONE of the follow prerequisites:
    1. 1 yr. exp. as a lead abatement worker; OR
    2. 2 yr. exp. in a related field (e.g. lead, asbestos environmental remediation work) or in the building construction trades.
  3. Attend Lead Abatement Supervisor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Abatement Supervisor Refresher course.

  4. Register for The Exam: To schedule an exam make sure you view the list of dates and locations and send your application to the below address. There is a $50 non-refundable fee.

  5. Apply to the Texas DSHS (Texas Department of State Health Services) for your Lead Abatement Supervisor certification by sending the application to the below address. There is a $308.00 initial/renewal application fee that is valid for 2 years. If your certification has been expired for less 90 days, there is a $458.00 fee. If your certification has been expired for more than 90 days but less than a year, there is a $608.00 fee

Steps to Become a Lead Abatement Worker:

  1. Texas Lead Abatement Workers conduct abatement in target housing and child-occupied facilities.

  2. There are no prerequisites to become a Texas Lead Abatement Worker.

  3. Attend Lead Abatement Worker Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Abatement Worker Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the Texas DSHS (Texas Department of State Health Services) for your Lead Abatement Worker certification by sending the application to the below address. There is a $104.00 initial/renewal application fee that is valid for 2 years. If your certification has been expired for less 90 days, there is a $154.00 fee. If your certification has been expired for more than 90 days but less than a year, there is a $204.00 fee
