Texas Lead Paint Inspection/Risk Assessment - Steps to Get Your License Today

Below we will review the steps on how to become certified as a lead professional to properly inspect and risk assess lead in the state of Texas.

Texas Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees, any company offering to perform lead hazard reduction work must be a certified Lead Firm. A $1,030.00 fee is required to register/renew and is valid for 2 years. If your certification has been expired for less 90 days, there is a $1,530.00 fee. If your certification has been expired for more than 90 days but less than a year, there is a $2,030.00 fee - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector:

  1. Texas Lead Inspectors perform inspections in target housing and child-occupied facilities; conduct post-abatement soil and dust clearance testing; complete a written inspection report.

  2. There are no prerequisites required for Texas Lead Inspectors.

  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector Refresher course.

  4. Register for The Exam: To schedule an exam make sure you view the list of dates and locations and send your application to the below address. There is a $50 non-refundable fee.

  5. Apply to the Texas DSHS (Texas Department of State Health Services) for your Lead Inspector certification by sending the application to the below address. There is a $308.00 initial/renewal application fee that is valid for 2 years. If your certification has been expired for less 90 days, there is a $458.00 fee. If your certification has been expired for more than 90 days but less than a year, there is a $608.00 fee

Steps to Become a Lead Risk Assessor:

  1. In addition to all functions of an Inspector, Texas Lead Risk Assessors perform risk assessments and lead hazard assessment activities (i.e., hazard screens) in target housing and child-occupied facilities; identify hazard control strategies to reduce or eliminate lead exposures, evaluate and interpret results of assessments; conduct post-abatement clearance sampling and evaluate results; complete a written risk assessment report.

  2. You must meet at least ONE of the follow prerequisites:
    1. Bachelor's degree + 1 yr. exp. in a related field (e.g. lead, asbestos, public health, environmental remediation work, or bldg. construction trades); OR
    2. Associate's degree + 2 yrs. exp. in a related field; OR
    3. High school diploma (or equivalent) + 3 yrs. experience in a related field; OR
    4. Certification as an IH, PE, public health nurse, RS, CSP, architect, or environmental scientist.
  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training and then Lead Risk Assessor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Risk Assessor Refresher course.

There is a $610.00 initial/renewal application fee that is valid for 2 years. If your certification has been expired for less 90 days, there is a $910.00 fee. If your certification has been expired for more than 90 days but less than a year, there is a $1,210.00 fee
