Below we will review the steps on how to become certified to properly remove lead in the state of Michigan.

Michigan Lead Abatement Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees, any company offering to perform lead hazard abatement in Michigan must also be registered as a Lead Abatement Firm. A $320.00 fee is required if you register from December - May and a $210.00 fee is required from June - November - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Abatement Supervisor:

  1. The Michigan Lead Abatement Supervisor oversees the removal of lead from buildings.

  2. Supervisors must meet ONE of the following prerequisites:
    1. 1 year as lead abatement worker, OR
    2. 2 years in related field, building trade
  3. Attend Lead Abatement Supervisor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Abatement Supervisor Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the MDCH (Michigan Department of Community Health) for your Lead Abatement Supervisor certification by sending the application to the below address.If you apply between March and August there is a $75 fee. If you apply between September and February the fee is only $50.

  5. Register for The Exam: To schedule an exam make sure you view the list of dates and locations and register by calling 517-335-9390. There is a $75 non-refundable fee.

Steps to Become a Lead Abatement Worker:

  1. The Michigan Lead Abatement Worker performs the removal of lead from buildings.

  2. There are no prerequisites for this certification.

  3. Attend Lead Abatement Worker Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Abatement Worker Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the MDCH (Michigan Department of Community Health) for your Lead Abatement Worker certification by sending the application to the below address. If you apply between March and August there is a $50 fee. If you apply between September and February the fee is only $40.
