Below we will review the steps on how to become certified to properly inspect and risk assess lead in the state of Michigan.

Michigan Lead Inspector / Risk Assessor Certification

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector:

  1. The Michigan Lead Inspector performs a surface-by-surface investigation to determine the presence of lead-based paint and the provision of a report explaining the results of the investigation.

  2. Lead Inspectors must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the MDCH (Michigan Department of Community Health) for your Lead Inspector certification by sending the application to the below address. If you apply between March and August there is a $200 fee. If you apply between September and February the fee is only $100.

  5. Register for The Exam: To schedule an exam make sure you view the list of dates and locations and register by calling 517-335-9390. There is a $75 non-refundable fee.

Steps to Become a Lead Risk Assessor:

  1. The Michigan Lead Risk Assessor performs an on-site investigation to determine the existence, nature, severity and location of lead-based paint hazards, and the provision of a report by the individual or the firm conducting the risk assessment, explaining the results of the investigation and options for reducing lead-based hazards.

  2. You must meet at least ONE of the follow prerequisites:
    1. Bachelor degree and 1 year experience in related field, OR
    2. Associates degree and 2 years experience in related field, OR
    3. High school diploma and 3 years experience in related field, OR
    4. Professional registration

  3. First you must attend Lead Inspector Initial training. Then you are able to attend Lead Risk Assessor Initial training.

  4. Apply to the MDCH (Michigan Department of Community Health) for your Lead Risk Assessor certification by sending the application to the below address. If you apply between March and August there is a $350 fee. If you apply between September and February the fee is only $200.
