Steps to Receive Your Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor License in Connecticut

Below we will review the steps on how to become certified as a lead consultant to properly inspect and assess risk of lead hazards in the state of Connecticut.

Connecticut Lead Consultant Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees, any company or sole proprietor offering to perform lead hazard reduction consultation work for inspections or risk assessment must be certified as a Lead Consultant Contractor. A $625.00 fee is required to register - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector:

  1. The Connecticut Lead Inspector performs a surface-by-surface investigation to determine the presence of lead-based paint and the provision of a report explaining the results of the investigation.

  2. You must meet at least ONE of the follow prerequisites:
    1. Attend Lead Inspector Certification Initial training OR
    2. Certification as an industrial hygienist with experience in lead inspection and hazard identification (FORM C, Verification of Credential) AND Lead Inspector Certification Refresher training.
  3. Register for The Lead & Environmental Hazard Association (LEHA) Exam: Contact Pearson Vue, (888) 204-6203, or www.pearsonvue.com to register.

  4. Apply to the CT DPH (Connecticut Department of Public Health) for your Lead Consultant certification by sending the application to the below address. There is a $50.00 application fee.

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector / Risk Assessor:

  1. The Connecticut Lead Inspector / Risk Assessor performs an on-site investigation to determine the existence, nature, severity and location of lead-based paint hazards, and the provision of a report by the individual or the firm conducting the risk assessment, explaining the results of the investigation and options for reducing lead-based hazards.

  2. You must meet at the follow prerequisites:
    1. Complete at least twenty-five (25) lead inspections over a minimum three (3) month period as a credentialed lead inspector (FORM A, Verification of Experience), OR
    2. At least one year of experience in a related field such as lead, asbestos, radon, or other environmental remediation work (FORM B, Verification of Field Experience);
    AND
    1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education (submit sealed transcript) and at least one year of experience in a related field such as lead, asbestos, radon, or other environmental remediation work, OR
    2. Certification as an industrial hygienist, or credentialed as an engineer, architect, sanitarian or in a related scientific field (FORM C, Verification of Credential), OR
    3. Hold a high school diploma or equivalency and at least two (2) years of experience in a related field such as lead, asbestos, radon, or other environmental remediation work (FORM A , Verification of Experience);
  3. Register for The Lead & Environmental Hazard Association (LEHA) Exam: Contact Pearson Vue, (888) 204-6203, or www.pearsonvue.com to register.
