Colorado Lead Paint Inspection - How to Get Your License

Below we will review the steps on how to become certified as a lead professional to properly inspect and risk assess lead in the state of colorado.

Colorado Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees, any company or Sole Proprietor offering to perform lead evaluation work (Inspection, Lead Hazard Screen, and Risk Assessment) must be a certified Lead Firm with the state of Colorado. A $500.00 fee is required to register/renew - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector:

  1. Colorado Lead Inspectors perform inspections and clearance testings.

  2. There are no prerequisites required for Colorado Lead Inspectors.

  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the CDPHE (Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment) for your Lead Inspector certification by sending the application to the below address. There are different fees associated with each initial certification type: a $230.00 for 1 year; $410.00 for 2 years; and $590.00 for 3 years. For each refresher certification type, the fees are as follows: $180.00 for 1 year; $360.00 for 2 years; and $540.00 for 3 years.

  5. Register for The Exam: To schedule an exam make sure you view the list of dates and locations.

Steps to Become a Lead Risk Assessor:

  1. Colorado Lead Risk Assessors perform inspections, clearance testing, lead hazard screens and risk assessments

  2. You must meet at least ONE of the follow prerequisites:
    1. Bachelor's degree and 1 year of experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos,environmental remediation work, or construction), OR
    2. Associate's degree and 2 years experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, environmental remediation work, or construction); OR
    3. Certification as an industrial hygienist, professional engineer, registered architect and/or certification in a related engineering/health/environmental field (e.g., safety professional, environmental scientist); OR
    4. A high school diploma (or equivalent), and at least 3 years of experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, environmental remediation work or construction).
  3. Attend Lead Risk Assessor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Risk Assessor Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the CDPHE (Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment) for your Lead Risk Assessor certification by sending the application to the below address.
