Why Should You Take This OSHA 10-Hour Maritime Industry Course?
The Occupational Safety and Health Act was enacted to provide on-the-job safety and health conditions for American employees. The Act established the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and assigned it a general duty to ensure that employers keep their workplaces free from hazards likely to cause death or serious harm to employees. The Act also gave the Secretary of Labor the authority to impose more specific duties or standards to certain high-risk industries by adopting additional standards if necessary.
This OSHA Outreach Training Program for the Maritime Industry provides training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces in the maritime industry. The program also provides information regarding workers' rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. The 10-hour class is intended for entry level workers, while the 30-hour class is more appropriate for supervisors or workers with some safety responsibility.
Through this training, OSHA helps to ensure that workers are more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights, and contribute to our nation's productivity. This course covers practices of identifying, reducing, eliminating and reporting on-site hazards. It also teaches safety awareness and assists workers in recognizing and reducing risks in the workplace.
This course is intended to provide entry level maritime industry worker awareness on recognizing and preventing hazards on a work site. The training covers a variety of safety and health hazards which a worker may encounter on the job. OSHA recommends this training as an orientation to occupational health and safety. Workers must receive additional training on hazards specific to their work. Training should emphasize hazard identification, avoidance, control, and prevention.

The OSHA 10-Hr Maritime course that I attended last week was one of the best courses I've attended in a really long time. Our instructor, Brandon, was amazing, and did a great job at keeping the attention of the class (especially during portions where the info was dry or the videos that we had to watch were old or dated). His humor was outstanding, and in my opinion, is the magic ingredient needed for a class such as this. Thanks again, to the team at Metropolitan Solutions for delivering a great experience.

Pretty good course that gives what would be expected for this certification. One thing to note is that starting a year or two ago the Navy started migrating from eSOMS to a newer system called eTagout (really similar to SOMS) that also includes electronic WAFs. As of last year, all shipyard WAFs were still done on paper (at least in King's Bay).
Sometimes the instructor would talk during videos to provide extra information, but I found it really difficult to understand what anyone was saying due to the conflicting audio streams. Willard R.

This course was a must refresher regarding current OSHA standards to stay relevant. I am a lifelong learner so this is a MUST have.
