This 8-hour Vermont Lead Renovator RRP Initial certification course covers proper procedures for dealing with lead-based paint in renovation, repair, and painting projects. This certification is mandatory for individuals in Vermont performing work that falls under the Vermont Lead Renovation, Repair, Painting, and Maintenance (RRPM) rule.

In October 2022, the State of Vermont received authorization from the US EPA to enforce the EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Program. In order to perform lead-safe renovation or painting work on a pre-1978 residence or child-occupied facilities in the State of Vermont, contractors, painters and other professionals must be licensed.

How to Get Your RRP Lead-safe Supervisor License in Vermont:

  1. Successfully complete the 8-hour Certified Lead Renovator Initial Course
  2. Complete the 2-hour online Vermont Inspection, Repair and Cleaning (IRC) Practices Course and review "What Workers Need to Know About Vermont's RRPM Regulations"
  3. Apply for the Lead-Safe Supervisor RRPM License with VT ($50 annually)
  4. Apply for the Lead-Safe RRPM Firm license if applicable ($300 every 5 years)

    Topics To Be Covered

      • State and federal regulations for lead-based paint
      • Pre-renovation paperwork and education
      • Testing of surfaces in the project area to determine the presence or absence of lead-based paint or coating
      • Training other works on lead-safe work practices
      • Worksite setup & creating containment measures
      • Responsibilities of the Certified Renovator during the job
      • Final cleanup and cleaning verification
      • Preparing and maintaining project records

      Who Should Take This Course?

      • Anyone performing lead renovation, repairs, painting or maintenance in the state of Vermont

      Renewal Requirements

The RRP initial course certificate and IRC training certificate are both valid for five years. After that, workers must complete RRP refresher training and retake the IRC course prior to their expiration date. Vermont also accepts the 4-hour EPA online RRP refresher course which is valid for 3 years and can be completed every other renewal period.

The Vermont Lead-Safe Supervisor license is valid for one year and must be renewed annually (NOTE: this is for the state registration process only - see training renewal timelines above). The Vermont Lead-Safe Firm license is valid for five years and must be renewed before the expiration date.
