For Philadelphia Rental Properties: An EPA Lead Dust Sampling Technician can issue a Lead-safe Certificate for a rental property after a successful sampling, and this certificate for the property is valid for 4 years. Learn More
Renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint can create dangerous lead paint dust. The purpose of lead dust clearance is to determine if the area is safe for re-occupancy.
In order to ensure the safety of the tenants for any renovation project in older housing, it is highly recommended that a Dust Sampling Technician provides their services to ensure that proper lead dust cleaning procedures have been followed.
This Lead Dust Sampling Technician certification allows individuals to conduct clearance tests following renovation projects to ensure that proper lead dust cleaning procedures have been followed. This training course concludes with the 25-question technician certification exam and is valid for 5 years. EPA Dust Sampling Technicians must work for an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm.
There are 5 steps to become an EPA Lead Dust Sampling Technician:
- Get registered for an EPA-approved lead Dust sampling technician course
- Submit a Firm application to the EPA on behalf of your company
- Complete the training in a public or private workshop
- Pass the 25-question certification exam given in class
- Receive your Firm Certificate from the EPA and you're in the clear!
EPA Lead-Safe Firm Certification
Before or after class, register your company with the EPA to get the Lead-Safe Firm Certificate. This is an online application through the EPA website, and is required for all businesses offering DST services, including sole proprietors. I recently completed the 8-hour lead safe testing certification course and was thoroughly impressed with the quality of instruction. The instructor was engaging, interactive, and extremely knowledgeable about both the course material and the industry as a whole.
What set this course apart was the hands-on approach. The instructor didn’t just lecture—she demonstrated the correct testing procedures and then gave each of us the opportunity to practice while she observed. She provided real-time evaluation and correction where needed, which was invaluable for building confidence and competence.

Office and accommodations are top notch. Nice, clean, more toilets then you can ask for, coffee, nearby mall and Chinatown provide everything you need during lunch break. I took this course to renew my dust sampling certification since refresher courses were not available in my area. The instructor was excellent. She was clear, went through the course materials, and made sure everyone understood how to calculate dust sampling measurements. She also kept the class lively by sharing relevant experiences with dust sampling for her clients. I recently completed the Lead Testing class taught by Nyirah, and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. Nyirah was knowledgeable, patient, and thorough in her teaching. She explained each step of the testing process clearly and made sure everyone understood the material before moving on.
What stood out most was her ability to make a technical subject easy to understand. She provided real-world examples, answered every question with detail, and kept the class engaged throughout. The hands-on portions were especially helpful and gave me the confidence to perform lead testing correctly and safely.

I don't know how SBP Lead Testing managed to make an 8 hour course interesting and entertaining while still teaching us the required material but they found a way! Heavily reccomend!
