Steps to Get Your Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor License in Virginia

Below we will review the steps on how to get certified to properly assess and inspect lead in the state of Virginia.

Virginia Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Certification

Steps to Become a Lead Inspector:

  1. The Virginia Lead Inspector performs a surface-by-surface investigation to determine the presence of lead-based paint and the provision of a report explaining the results of the investigation.

  2. You must be at least 18 years of age become a certified lead inspector.

  3. Attend Lead Inspector Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the DPOR (VA Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation) for your Lead Inspector certification via mail to the below address. There is an $80 non-refundable application fee paid by check, money order, or credit card.

  5. Register for The Exam: Approved applicants must contact DPOR to register for an exam. There is a non-refundable $150 fee required to sit for the exam. The exam is offered daily and deadline to sign up is two weeks prior to the exam date. The exam is offered in the below cities:
    • Charlottesville
    • Falls Church
    • McLean
    • Richmond
    • Roanoke
    • Virginia Beach

    Note: Each applicant shall pass a board-approved licensing examination for supervisors within 36 months after completion of the board-approved lead abatement supervisor initial training course or the board-approved lead supervisor refresher course. Applicants who fail the examination three times must provide to the board evidence, after the date of their third examination failure, of having retaken and satisfactorily completed the initial training requirements and make new application to the board. The applicant is then eligible to sit for the examination an additional three times.


Steps to Become a Lead Risk Assessor:

  1. The Virginia Lead Risk Assessor performs an on-site investigation to determine the existence, nature, severity and location of lead-based paint hazards, and the provision of a report by the individual or the firm conducting the risk assessment, explaining the results of the investigation and options for reducing lead-based hazards.

  2. Risk Assessors must be at least 18 years of age and meet the ONE of following prerequisites:
    1. Certification or licensure as an industrial hygienist, a professional engineer, a registered architect or licensure in a related engineering/health/environmental field; OR
    2. A bachelor's degree and one year of experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, environmental remediation work, or construction); OR
    3. An associate's degree and two years experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, environmental remediation work, or construction); OR
    4. A high school diploma or its equivalent, and at least three years experience in a related field (e.g., lead, asbestos, environmental remediation work, or construction).

  3. Attend Lead Risk Assessor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Risk Assessor Refresher course.
