How to Win the Bid and Get Certified in Lead Removal in Washington

Below we will review the steps on how to become certified as a lead professional to properly remove lead in the state of Washington.

Washington Lead Abatement Certification

Company Registration

In addition to having the proper training certifications for all employees, any company (including Sole Proprietors) offering services to perform lead hazard reduction work must be a certified Lead Firm. A $25 fee is required to register - view application and requirements.

Steps to Become a Lead Abatement Supervisor:

  1. Washington Lead Abatement Supervisors perform supervision of abatement projects, preparation of occupant protection plans, abatement reports, and all abatement activities performed by abatement workers.

  2. You must meet at least ONE of the follow prerequisites:
    1. 1 year of experience as a certified lead-based paint abatement worker OR
    2. 2 years of experience in a related field such as lead, asbestos, environmental remediation, or construction.
  3. Attend Lead Abatement Supervisor Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Abatement Supervisor Refresher course.

  4. Apply to the Washington Department of Commerce & Register for Exam for your Lead Abatement Supervisor certification by sending the application to the below address. There is a $25.00 application fee. Included in the application packet is an examination request form

Steps to Become a Lead Abatement Worker:

  1. Washington Lead Abatement Workers perform abatement activities under the direction of a certified abatement supervisor

  2. There are no prerequisites to become a Washington Lead Abatement Worker.

  3. Attend Lead Abatement Worker Initial training. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Abatement Worker Refresher course

  4. Apply to the Washington Department of Commerce for your Lead Abatement Worker certification by sending the application to the below address. There is a $25.00 application fee.
