COURSE DESCRIPTION

Why Should You Take This Construction Site Fire Safety Manager training course?

This Construction Site Fire Safety Manager training course is designed to fulfill the training requirements for Fire Safety Manager under the new regulation, section 1401.1 of the NYC Fire Safety Department as well as to provide the class attendees an overview of the fire safety requirements and responsibilities of a fire safety manager. Students must attend the training in its entirety to be eligible to take the end-of-course examination. After successfully completing the required training and passing the course exam, interested candidates will be required to take the Certificate of Fitness (S-56) exam with the FDNY.

 

Who Should Attend This Construction Site Fire Safety Manager training course?

The Construction Site Fire Safety Manager Training is designed to fulfill the training requirements for Fire Safety Manager under the new regulation, section 1401.1 of the NYC Fire Safety Department. Students can take this course for informational purposes but to obtain the Certificate of Fitness S-56 from the Fire Department of New York, applicants must meet specific requirements.


Course Completion Process:  

Students will receive a course manual, S-56 study guide and the S56 license application. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a course completion certificate and a FDNY verification letter. Class meets for 8 hours with a minimum of 10 minute breaks every two hours and a half hour lunch break.

 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate Fire Department reference material, including the S-56 Certificate of Fitness Study Guide, to stay current with the New York City Fire Code.
  • Identify rules and regulations that were promulgated after serious fires in New York City.
  • Determine New York City specific fire safety issues.
  • Prescribe control measures for New York City fire safety issues
  • Choose safe work methods, including best practices for fire safety at their construction sites to prevent fires.
  • Pass the school end-of-course examination on the basis of having successfully completed the CSFSM course.

 

Course Completion Requirements:  

100% attendance for the course and active participation in learning activities including hands-on exercises and the end exam is required. Students must receive a minimum passing score of 70% on the 50-question multiple-choice exam to pass the class and receive the course completion certificate and verification letter. Students are allotted 2-hours to complete the exam, which is not open book.

Students who do not pass the end-of-course test will be extended a second opportunity to take the exam. It is the students’ responsibility to contact TSCTA to schedule their retake exam within one week of the original class date. Students who do not successfully pass the exam a second time will have the option of registering for another construction site fire safety manager training course at a reduced price of 50% of the original course fee. Students must contact TSCTA to schedule and pay for the retake class within 6 months following the original class date. After 6 months, students will be required to pay the full course fee. Make-up time is not permitted for this training course. Students who miss time from any individual session must reschedule and attend the full training course.

 

Prerequisites:

There are no prerequisites to attend the course, however there are eligibility requirements for the Examination for Certificate of Fitness for Construction Site Fire Safety Manager (CSFSM) (S-56). Applicants must satisfy at least one of the experience requirements listed below and be able to provide necessary documentation:

  • A Site Safety Manager or Site Safety Coordinator certificate issued by the Department of Buildings pursuant to BC3310.5 and Department of Buildings rule 1 RCNY 104-08; or
  • At least three (3) years of full-time experience within the last six (6) years prior to the date of the application: 
    • (1) working for a governmental agency or a construction, design or consulting firm;
    • (2) at construction sites upon which “major buildings” (as that term is defined in BC3310.2) are being constructed; and
    • (3) with responsibility for construction site safety and/or supervision of construction; or
  • At least eight (8) years of full-time experience within the past 12 years prior to the date of the application working for a governmental agency with responsibility for conducting and/or supervising fire code or fire safety inspections or enforcement; or
  • At least ten (10) years of full-time experience within the past 15 years prior to the date of the application working as a firefighter or fire officer in a paid fire department. Active FDNY employee must receive permission from NYC Conflict of Interest Board (COIB) before beginning a private employment. 

The NYC Fire Department will accept applications with satisfactory proof of documentation for pre-approval before attending the training if you are not sure of your eligibility.

Certificate of Fitness Application Fees: $25.00 for originals and $ 5.00 for renewals paid to New York City Fire Department.
