COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Competent Rigger Level 1 course covers basic to intermediate rigging applications. The rigger will recognize common sling hitch types and have the ability to calculate tensions based on sling angles of symmetric loads. The rigger will also learn pre-use inspection techniques that are utilized to determine if a sling is safe to use.


Target Audience: Personnel with potential involvement in directing a lift or has the responsibility over a site where a lift may take place.


Learning Objectives:

  • General
    • Rigging practices - correct practices vs. common mistakes, center of gravity - effects on suspended load, taglines - basic do’s and don’ts, hitch types - vertical, choker & basket, load angle factors - calculating force on sling based on angle, D/d ratios - resultant decrease in a slings ultimate strength, sling protectors - three-types including cut protection for synthetic slings.
  • Sling Inspection
    • Round slings, web slings, wire rope slings, alloy chain slings, wire mesh slings
  • Hardware inspection
    • Shackle inspection, hooks, swivel inspection, master link and ring inspection, GLink inspection, eyebolt & swivel hoist ring inspection, turnbuckle Inspection.
