Corporate Training By Zack Academy - Life Cycle Cost Analysis

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Why Should You Take This Life Cycle Cost Analysis Course?

This Life Cycle Cost Analysis course considers the use of life cycle cost analysis for comparing equipment and building envelope options for high performance buildings. It will explore the concepts of life cycle analysis using the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) "Building Life-Cycle Cost" tool. Specific focus will be given to assessing the incremental impact of energy, water and renewable projects within the design of high performance buildings.

Sustainable design should include a complete life cycle analysis in order to effectively weigh economic, environmental and social options. The scope of energy conservation should be expanded to include a cradle to grave comparison of existing and potential future commercial products. This course will provide participants with the skills required to perform life cycle cost analysis of design alternatives for clients going through a LEED® project.

The Following Topics Will Be Covered:

  • Concepts of life cycle cost analysis
  • Benefits of incremental cost analysis for high performance building systems
  • Typical life expectancies of equipment/building systems
  • Financial variables for LCCA completion
  • Net present values of various design alternatives
  • NIST's "Building Life-Cycle Cost" Tool
  • Case studies
  • Overall sustainability of new design
  • Retrofit projects

 Who Should Attend This Course?

  • Engineers
  • Architects
  • Technologists
  • Other related LEED® Professionals (i.e. individuals responsible for providing incremental cost analysis to their clients during the preliminary design phase a LEED® project)

Please NotePrior to the course, participants are encouraged to download the free "Building Life-Cycle Cost" tool, although this is not a course requirement. A portion of course time will be devoted to allowing participants to have some "hands-on" time to familiarize themselves with the tool. This will ultimately make participants more comfortable using the tool post-course.

Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain and discuss the concept of life cycle cost analysis, and the benefit of incremental cost analysis for high performance building systems
  • Develop the ability to determine typical life expectancies of equipment/building systems, and identify required financial variables (e.g. internal rate of return, fuel escalation rate) required to carry out a complete LCCA
  • Calculate the net present value of various design alternatives using the NIST’s “Building Life-Cycle Cost” tool, and provided case study data
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary team to improve the overall sustainability of new design and retrofit projects, by providing incremental cost analysis of various design options.
