Pathways to Reimbursement:  A hands-on workshop for  understanding how to  leverage and expand Medicaid services in your state

This workshop will provide healthy homes professionals with a basic introduction to the Medicaid program; suggestions for expanding or leveraging services within a state Medicaid program to increase access to healthy homes services for Medicaid enrollees; and, hands-on exercises for generating an action plan for your program to explore reimbursement.

How to undertake a healthy homes integration program that can result in both cost savings and health benefits.

This program will examine the Connecticut Efficient and Healthy Homes Initiative as a model for other states and communities, how it created a process for collaboration among weatherization, health, housing and safety agencies and organizations and the values realized through the collaboration, and how the program streamlined an approach to energy efficiency and healthy housing interventions.

Public health and lead poisoning prevention implications of the recent California lead paint litigation and are the legal arguments applicable elsewhere.

This session will review the recent court decision in California that awarded 1.2 billion dollars to several California communities to undertake lead hazard control work; what the prospects are for upholding the decision; the nature of the abatement plan; and, prospects for other jurisdictions to bring about law suits.

How to expand from lead poisoning prevention and lead hazard control programs to Healthy Homes programs.

This workshop will explore options, procedures and obstacles encountered at the local level when expanding from lead poisoning prevention and lead hazard control programs to a holistic Healthy Homes program, a movement consistent with Federal program policies and funding strategies. The workshop will examine staff structuring and training requirements, education and outreach strategies, funding opportunities, goal setting, and how to engage the political community, other agencies and community organizers.

How to conduct a healthy housing assessment and carry out hazard remediation.

This workshop will include a step-by-step process in how to conduct a healthy housing inspection and hazard remediation. Topics will include lead, asthma triggers, moisture intrusion, insect and pest elimination, asbestos, radon, sewage backup and indoor air quality. The workshop is designed to instruct participants in how to recognize “red flags” that may lead to unhealthy housing conditions and to be able to recommend further in-depth inspections if necessary.

How to reduce and/or eliminate problems and obstacles in grant implementation, and how to increase the probability of a successful grant program.

This workshop will identify areas of concern in grant management, examine how to reduce and/or eliminate problems associated with grant administration, how to stay on target with benchmarks and deliverables, and how to build partnerships in the community that can help you realize and sustain your program objectives.

How to implement an integrated pest management and bud bug eradication program.

This workshop will outline the process used in the very successful “IPM in Multi-family Housing” training program designed to build effective IPM programs that involve all the stakeholders: building management, facilities and maintenance staff, residents, and pest management professionals. The workshop will demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of IPM in multi-family housing, examine ways to reduce exposure to pests and pesticides, and improve resident knowledge and participation. Current best practices in bed bug eradication will be explored.

How to develop partnerships for successfully conducting health education and outreach programs in minority communities.

This workshop will examine strategies for undertaking a program’s education and outreach objectives by creating partnerships among organizations that represent at risk populations in minority communities: how those partnerships were created and how they supported efforts to reach out to minority populations.

How to carry out LBP evaluations in a legally compliant way, identify and correct problems with LBP inspections and risk assessments, and properly carry out inspection and clearance protocols.

This program will focus on LBP inspections and risk assessments, what has historically occurred, what is required, and what can be done to be more effectively and to minimize liability.
