Marine Shipyard Competent Person Courses
In order to be recognized as a qualified Marine Shipyard Competent Person to work on a US Navy vessel, one must successfully complete an initial 3-day course and receive annual 1-day classes taught by an NFPA certified Marine Chemist. Specific requirements can be found in NAVSEA 009-07 Standard Items. Briefly, the Marine Shipyard Competent Person must be able to understand the directions and instructions left by the NFPA certified Marine Chemist; have knowledge of the Subparts of 29 CFR 1915; know the structure and location where work is to be performed on vessels and within shipyard location; must understand how to use testing equipment and how to accurately interpret the results of required instrumentation as well as knowing how to post results and maintain records.

He was very clear in explaining and teaching me the way to understand OSHA Standards to become a Shipyard Competent Person as learning to follow Regulations to be safe for Employees to enter confined spaces and performing Hot work. This was my 2nd time doing the initial course bc my last refresher expired. Our instructor was amazing. Very thorough and knowledgeable about everything. Rick and Max gave a great class. Very thorough in the information and emphasis on the importance of various regulations. They covered OSHA, NFPA, Navy ,etc. regulations and provided great material to reference. I think the class would have been better in person but considering a pandemic, these guys did a great job getting the information across to the class. Jim P.

I found the course more enjoyable then the initial taken ten years ago. Rick and Max kept it interesting and plenty of time was given to cover what may have been lost during translation. The class was very detailed and conveyed most (if not all) of the necessary information required to perform SCP duties at my worksite. I would highly recommend this course for anyone in the Maritime industry from a general safety standpoint, but especially for anyone who is in a QA/Safety role in this field. Mark G.
