Why Should You Take This 16-Hour Suspended Scaffold User and Refresher course?

As per 3314.4.5.4 of the 2014 NYC Construction Codes, this 16-Hour Suspended Scaffold User course is required by the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) to use or work on suspended scaffolds in New York City. Training will include instruction on how to visually inspect suspended scaffold equipment, identify basic scaffold components, and execute safe assembly and disassembly of the equipment. Students are required to participate in all class exercises, which shall include use of various types of suspended scaffolding and rigging operations. This course consists of several different components which include power point presentations, lecture, real life case studies, class discussion and hands on demonstration.

 

Who Should Attend This 16-Hour Suspended Scaffold User Course?  

This training is geared for construction workers performing work from suspended scaffolds in NYC. These training needs would apply particularly to new employees with no experience and workers that never attended scaffold safety training. This training is also beneficial for supervisors, project managers, or individuals licensed as Site Safety Managers (SSM), Site Safety Coordinators (SSC) and Superintendents.

 

Course Completion Process:  Upon successful completion of the course (in 2-3 business days), participants will receive a 16-Hour User Suspended Scaffold course completion picture ID that will be valid for 4 years.

 

Prerequisites:  There are no prerequisites needed to attend this course. Students must be able to verbally communicate with instructor in primary language of the training.

 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify suspended scaffold systems and their essential components
  • Discuss common suspended scaffold hazards based on statistical and historical data provided
  • Outline differences between OSHA and NYC DOB scaffold regulations and their sources
  • Demonstrate skills that are necessary to assemble Personal Fall Arrest Systems used on suspended scaffolds
  • Apply various applications & connection techniques using ropes, knots & hitches
  • Assemble the block and tackle for a fiber rope light duty scaffold
  • Construct the wire rope termination for hoisting rope on suspended scaffolds

 

Course Completion Requirements:  Students are required to complete 100% of the course and actively participate in all learning activities including hands-on demonstrations and the final course exam which students must obtain a score of 70% or higher to receive course completion materials. Students who do not pass the written or practical exam will have one opportunity to retake the entire 16 hour course and retake the exam at reduced fee of $150. 

Hands-on assessment will be made by instructor to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, terminating wire rope, building a block and tackle system, and operating scaffold hoist motor. 


COURSE LOGISTICS
CertificatesStudents receive temporary certificates at the end of class. Flagger and Scaffold students will receive photo ID cards by mail in under 2 weeks. OSHA students will receive OSHA cards by mail in approximately 30 days.
