Why Should You Take This Lead Inspector Initial Course?

This Lead Inspector Initial training provides information for individuals who perform lead-based paint inspections and/or clearance examinations on abatement and renovation projects. This course will teach the legal and technical issues and obligations facing inspectors when inspecting for lead hazards.

This class will teach individuals how to determine whether or not lead-based paint or other lead hazards are present in sufficient quantities to require abatement according to regulatory guidelines.

Requirements for Successful Course Completion:

  • Ability to Read, Understand and Speak English Language
  • Attend entire course in consecutive days
  • Pass a written, multiple choice exam


This course is provided by an accredited trainer that is approved by the necessary EPA and/or Authorized-State lead program, as required based on the course location.

It is the participant's responsibility to verify that the course they attend will be accepted in any other state(s) where you will be performing work, and to process any required paperwork that may be necessary. 

Your state may have detailed education, experience and application processing requirements to qualify for licensing in the Lead field. Students are responsible to verify these requirements prior to registering for a course. There are numerous reciprocity agreements with EPA and other states with authorized lead-based paint programs. Your state may accept training for certification programs from those training providers accredited by EPA or other state authorized programs. Because reciprocity agreements are subject to change, it is strongly recommended that you contact your state's lead program before registering.

Individual App Requirements$410 every three years
Individual Exam And FeesThird party exam. $70 for each attempt.
Company Application Requirements$550 initial and $35 for each additional jurisdiction
Refresher TrainingEvery 3 years if the individual completed a training course with a course test and hands-on assessment; OR every 5 years if the individual completed a training course with a proficiency test
Reciprocity<p>To apply for certification from EPA if you are currently certified by an authorized state, U.S. territory, or Indian tribe, you must: </p> <ul> <li>Complete, sign, and date EPA form 8500-28 (Rev 09/04)</li> <li>Enclose a copy of your valid certificate from an authorized state, U.S. territory, or Indian tribe, highlighting the certification expiration date, if applicable</li> <li>Submit two identical passport photographs of you alone</li> <li>Calculate the appropriate fee using the fees schedule provided</li> </ul>
