Why Should You Take This Management and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments course?

This Management and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments workshop provides attendees with management and remediation solutions to contaminants in both marine and freshwater sediments including the effects of remediation on the benthic environment. All aspects of contaminated sediments will be reviewed, including determination of contaminant sources, site characterization, remedial technology selection, monitoring, and demonstration of the effectiveness of remedial technology. Participants will come away from this course with the skills and knowledge to assess and remediate contaminated sediments with a scientifically valid and legally defensible plan at minimum cost.

Attendees will learn about both conventional and emerging technologies for remediating contaminated sediments. Technologies presented will be: removal followed by treatment and disposal; in situ isolation of the sediments from the environment by covering the sediment with neutral materials (i.e., passive capping); active capping technologies that employ chemically active sequestering agents, and monitored natural recovery, which involves monitoring processes that isolate, degrade, transform, and immobilize sediment contaminants under natural conditions.

These emerging technologies that address contaminant toxicity, biogeochemistry, and transport mechanisms offer much promise and will enhance the attendee's ability to effectively manage sediments at a reduced cost and improved effectiveness over conventional methods.

Intended Audience:

This course is intended for environmental professionals, consultants, researchers, students, industrial site owners and operators, and government agencies such as DOD and DOE.  It is designed for professionals related to contaminated sediments, including contaminant sources and fate, remediation technologies, and risk assessment. Professionals seeking a greater understanding of contaminated sediments and remediation technologies for contaminated sediments will greatly benefit from this workshop.

Topics To Be Covered Include:

  • Distinguish sources and types of contaminants at sites
  • Determine fate and transport of contaminants
  • Understand current remediation strategies and new approaches
  • Assess remediation effectiveness: defining, monitoring, and demonstrating success
  • Apply chemical/toxicological/biological measurements to characterize the site before/after remediation
  • Understand the selection of remedial technology
  • Understand remedial technology deployment methods
  • Apply novel, improved tools and techniques for site-specific assessment of contaminants before/after remediation

What to Bring to Class:  Pen or pencil, and paper if you do not want to take notes in your manual. Drinks and snacks will be provided each day. Lunch will be on your own.
