Please Note:  This five-day RESNET HERS Rater course provides you with the training and examination required to become a certified HERS Rater. This program includes all your course material, two (2) provisional ratings, and the HERS Rater Exam. After taking our course, Rater candidates may then be certified by a RESNET accredited Rating Provider after completing 3 probationary ratings under the supervision of the Providers Quality Assurance Designee (QAD). Also, to be a RESNET HERS rater, business liability insurance is a requirement to become certified.

A list of Rating Providers can be found on RESNET’s website: www.resnet.us

Why Should You Take This RESNET HERS Rater Course?

The Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) HERS Rater training program certifies individuals to provide homeowners and home builders a detailed analysis of energy consumption and money-saving energy conservation strategies.

This course is conducted in accordance with the RESNET standards and addresses the following topics:

  • Basic Principles of Building Science
  • Blower Door Testing Procedures
  • Duct Leakage Testing Procedures
  • Construction Flaws
  • Combustion Safety
  • Energy Modeling

RESNET standards are recognized by the mortgage and financial industries, as well as several states and the federal government:

  • Mortgage industry for capitalizing energy efficiency in mortgages
  • Financial industry for certification of "white tags"
  • States for minimum code compliance in 16 states
  • Federal government for verification of building energy performance for:
  • Federal tax credit qualification
  • EPA ENERGY STAR labeled homes
  • U.S. Department of Energy Building America program

In addition to classroom training, each student will have the opportunity to complete two energy models during this course. The first model will use a set of building drawings to predict energy performance of a home that is not yet built. The second model will apply test data gained during field training to build a model of an existing home. Both models can be used to identify the most cost-effective energy improvement options available to a homeowner or home builder.

The RESNET HERS Rater Test is an online 50 question true or false, multiple choice exam covering building science concepts and rating procedures. Prospective raters have two hours to complete this open book test and must answer 80% or more of the questions correctly in order to pass. Raters receive their results immediately after completing the test. Successful examinees will be listed in the directory of certified raters posted on RESNET's website.
