The Building Performance Institute (BPI) is a nationally recognized certification, accreditation, and quality assurance body for home performance contractors. Focusing on the house as a system approach, BPI emphasizes the interdependence of building systems as they relate to energy consumption. BPI Building Analyst certification is the nation's most widely recognized energy auditor certification, and will give you the tools to analyze and correct any deficient features in older (and even modern!) residences.

This BPI Building Analyst program is the most convenient way to get certified by BPI and start offering home energy audits! Aligned with the Building Performance Institute's (BPI) Building Analyst Professional standards for energy auditing, this workshop provides a fundamental understanding of the whole-house approach to analyzing efficient and proper energy consumption, in addition to checking for health hazards, proper ventilation, understanding HVAC equipment operations and maintenance, and how to interact with clients when providing home energy audits. This program concludes with both the written and field exams for BPI certification.

Registration Includes:

  • Live Field Training and Written & Field Exams
  • Recorded Video for Independent Study
  • BPI Technical Standards
  • INTERCAZ Software - for CAZ Training
  • Course Manual, Practice Questions, and Course Certificate

There are 3 simple steps to starting your career as a certified BPI Building Analyst:

  1. Sign up for this preparation training program, which includes all certification exam fees.
  2. Attend the training workshop in your selected location.
  3. Pass the written and field exams administered in class at a BPI Test Center!

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites to attend the training sessions or sit for the exams.

Skills Required: High school math and reading skills are necessary to comprehend the scope of the presentation material, but no prior construction experience is required.

What is BPI? The Building Performance Institute (BPI) was founded in 1993 and is the most widely recognized association that certifies energy auditors on a national scale. Focusing on the house as a system approach, BPI emphasizes the interdependence of building systems as they relate to energy consumption. Endorsed by the DOE, certification is required for participation in many state and national contractor incentive programs.

Several times it was said that this training is very similar to home inspection training and that there is a lot of crossover. I am a licensed home inspector and I can tell you that you should no longer make this analogy. It took me months to get that license through educational training and apprenticeship. You are doing your students a disservice by trying to cram so much into a week. There should be an online course to get the basics out of the way basic construction and concepts so you can concentrate more on the energy specific aspects. I thought the course was too expensive to begin with, 2000. And after taking it I am certain that the cost does not equal the knowledge . My inspection license cost 2500 and time under a mentor professional inspector. At this point, I don't feel as confident with the physical tools or in the training immediately after this course as much as I did after I attained my home inspection license. Also, it is probably best to not have your instructors talk down about HVAC contractors I know two other people with the same certifications that do this also. It takes a minimum 3 years to get that license and the ones I know are very professional and know their business.

The workbook provided contained blurry black and white photos that had small, unreadable text. Pictures that required color contrast like thermal camera images looked like one big grey blur. Parts of the curriculum contradicted itself and the field test worksheet was unclear per the new standards. Half our class had a different field test guide and it caused confusion as to what was the correct test method. At least the instructor was able to find the correct information, but it took time and caused lots of stress amongst the candidates.
