Why should you attend this workshop?

The Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) has approved continuing education requirements for licensed construction supervisors in the state of Massachusetts. Licensees who renew a license or are issued a first-time license on or after July 1, 2011 shall be expected to fully comply with education requirements following a full two-year cycle. A qualifying Construction Supervisor licensee must provide proof of completion of required hours in the appropriate category in which the licensee is licensed (Restricted, Unrestricted or Specialty).

What if my license has expired? Is there a grace period to renew my CSL?

If a contractor's license has expired or will expire before an individual completes their Continuing Education (CE) hours, they have 1 year to fulfill the CE hours (without having to retake the test), but can't operate with a license until those CE requirements are met. If you have specific questions about your renewal period, please contact the Mass Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) at:  (617) 727-3200

How many hours of Continuing Education do I need as a Massachusetts Construction Supervisor? Different licenses require different amounts of Continuing Education:

  • Unrestricted Licensees Need 12 Hours Every Two (2) Years
  • Restricted Licensees Need 10 Hours Every Two (2) Years
  • Specialty Contractors (Masonry, Roofing, Windows/Siding, Demolition, Insulation) Need Six (6) Hours Every Two (2) Years

Does this seminar package fulfill my 12-Hour Continuing Education requirement for unrestricted license holders or the 10-Hour requirement for restricted license holders?

Yes! You will receive a certificate of completion for your continuing education course package that you can send in with your license renewal.

What classes do you offer for your MA Construction Supervisor License (CSL) Continuing Education Package?  The 12-Hour Package consists of six, 2-hour sessions over two (2) days that fulfill the necessary requirements for Code Review, Energy, Building Practices, Safety Practices, Lead Safety and an Elective (please see the syllabus for more details on each individual session):

DAY 1:

  • Employee Relationships in Building/Remodeling Firms
  • Workplace Safety: Ladders, Nail Guns, and Hand Tools
  • Lead-Safe Work Practices on the Construction Job Site

DAY 2:

  • Project Management for Residential Construction and Remodeling

DAY 1:

I.  Employee Relationships in Building/Remodeling Firms

This two-hour session addresses human resources considerations for building/remodeling firms. It will cover the employee relationship and important considerations when dealing with workers. The overview explains the importance of each of the considerations, procedures, and policies, and the downside—and risks—of not adequately addressing each. This will include the standard, expected components such as written policies, safety training, and job reviews. It will also cover the more complex and equally vital legal requirements, bookkeeping procedures, as well as the importance of defined job roles and accurate "time cards."  The session also addresses workers comp insurance requirements, along with an explanation of employee roles, and when it is acceptable (and when not) to treat workers as independent contractors.

Topics To Be Covered Include:

  • Introduction and Session Objectives
  • Legal Definitions
  • Job Risks and Insurance Considerations
  • Implementation
  • HR and Company Policies
  • Licenses, Legal Requirements and Procedures
  • Bookkeeping Procedures

II. Workplace Safety: Ladders, Nail Guns, and Hand Tools

  1. To make users aware of hazards currently encountered on a typical jobsite, and
  2. To emphasize and clarify the requirement for proper use and training

The session begins with a detailed look at ladders. Types, ratings, material, usage, inspections and training are discussed in detail. A ladder inspection form is provided to guide students to employ a JOB SITE SAFETY PROCEDURES MANUAL for their field use.

The second half of this session deals with commonly-used hand tools, touching upon several categories ranging from non-powered, powered, pneumatic (nail guns), powder actuated and jacks. This section introduces the attendee to a wide range of topics dealing with hazard recognition, PPE requirements, basic safety tips and training.

Topics To Be Covered Include:

  • Introduction to Ladder Safety
  • Types of Ladders and Ladder Selection
  • Best Practices, Hazard Recognition and Hazard Controls

We will stress the crucial importance of those two concepts to a successful, sustainable business, and will walk through the key operations one must employ to achieve this success. From proper planning to having systems in place to manage the fixed and anticipated details, a smoothly-run, carefully planned project is a profitable one, and also should deliver on the expectations of the client.
