Why Should You Take This 14-Hour FL Contractor License Renewal Package 1 - Handicap Accessibility: Real World Applications Course Package?

For Registered Contractors and Certified Contractors the renewal deadline is August 31st. All Registered Contractors and Certified Contractors are required to complete fourteen (14) hours of continuing education each renewal cycle. 

Of the fourteen hours, one hour is required in each of the following topics:

  • Specialized or Advanced Module that is approved by the Florida Building Commission,
  • Workplace Safety,
  • Business Practices,
  • Worker’s Compensation,
  • Laws and Rules Regulating the Construction Industry,
  • Wind Mitigation Methodologies (if license is held in the following category:  General, Building, Residential, Roofing, Specialty Structure, or Glass & Glazing.)

 

Please Note:  The remaining seven hours may include any of the above topics or general topics to the industry.

 

What Is Included in This Package?

This 14-Hour FL Contractor License Renewal Package 1 - Handicap Accessibility: Real World Applications course package fulfills all requirements for a two year renewal cycle for Registered Contractors and Certified Contractors. Students will have access to the course for up to 6 months. The courses offered within this package are:

  • 7-Hour ADA Standards: Real World Applications
  • 1-Hour Online Advanced Module on Gable End Anchoring & Framing for High Velocity Winds
  • 6-Hour Online Required Competency Course

When Does My License Renew?

Certified Contractors renew their license by August 31 each even-numbered year.

Registered Contractors renew their license by August 31 each odd-numbered year.

I. ADA Standards: Real World Applications

This seven hour internet video course covers the second chapter of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Chapter 2: Scoping Requirements sets the stage for all the following chapters of the ADA Standards. In this video course, material is presented by simple narration and power point video presentation, as well as on-site, real world video examples in various accessible buildings, used by both the public and by private businesses.

Upon completion, participants will have the skills to:

  • Recognize how the overall philosophy of the Americans with Disabilities Act can, and does create an environment of opportunity and non-discrimination. 
  • Be able recognize what facilities can, and should comply with ADA standards. 
  • Outline at least one design strategy based on ADA standards for the construction of either a public or private building.
  • Summarize the options available to the design or building professional when designing a facility per the requirements of the ADA Standards.

 

II. Florida Advanced Module on Gable End Anchoring & Framing for High Velocity Winds

This 1 hour course is intended to provide a minimum of one hour of instruction of continued education for Florida certificate holders and registrants pertaining to Gable End Anchoring and Framing. Inspection of residential buildings that endured past hurricanes in Florida has shown   that one of the most damaged structural components in residential homes is the gable-­end wall or the gable-end truss for timber wall or masonry wall constructions. This course is based on the 2010 Florida Building Code changes that surround the most common causes of gable-end failure during high velocity hurricane events.

Upon completion, participants will have the skills to:

  • Know what "load path" means and how it is maintained
  • Recognize and understand basic terminology for structural components  
  • Describe the limitations when using wood components to frame a gable-end wall

 

III. Florida Required Competency 

This 6 hour course fulfills the continuing education requirements outlined by 61G4-18.001 for Workplace Safety, Business Practices (Lien Law), Workers’ Compensation, Construction Laws and Rules and Wind Mitigation methodologies. Individual chapter descriptions below outline subjects, topics and subtopics covered.

  • Florida Construction Statutes and Rules
