Why Should You Take This NIOSH 582 - Sampling and Evaluating Airborne Asbestos Fibers course?

Federal and state regulations require specific training for personnel involved in asbestos management. This NIOSH 582 Equivalent course covers the OSHA and AHERA training and licensing requirements for Asbestos Air Monitors. Students will learn NIOSH-approved methods of collecting and evaluating airborne asbestos samples in occupational settings.

Please Note: This course includes statistics and sampling-related mathematics, calibration of air sampling equipment, and set-up and use of the phase contrast microscope. It is helpful if students have a good background in basic algebra and the ability to use a calculator with square and square-root functions. Hands-on exercises complement the practical instruction on asbestos air sample analysis. Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate that may be used for licensing purposes.

Who Should Attend This Course?

Microscopists, air sampling technicians, and industrial hygienists whose jobs include sampling and analyzing for asbestos fibers, fiberglass and man-made mineral fibers will benefit most from this course. This course is OSHA approved for asbestos abatement training. This course requires notification to state regulatory authorities and may be used for licensing as an asbestos abatement professional.

Topics To Be Covered Include:

  • Federal, State, and Local Regulations Related to Air Monitoring
  • Overview of NIOSH Method #7400 and OSHA Reference Method
  • Characteristics and Uses of Asbestos Fibers
  • Health Hazards of Asbestos Exposure
  • PCM vs. TEM Comparison
  • PCM Microscope Components and Their Function
  • Fibercounting Techniques
  • Microscope Set-Up and Calibration
  • Airflow Calibration
  • Sample Collection Techniques
  • Filter Mounting
  • Asbestos Counting

Please Note:  Students learn methods for the collection and quantitation of ambient air samples and personnel exposure. Students must pass the written final exam; complete in-class practical projects and quizzes; evaluate the required number of samples; and demonstrate proficiency in microscope alignment, calibration, and use.

The instructor made the course easy to understand and was thorough. Good interaction between instructor and the students. Explained places need to pay more attention when conducting a sampling. Also, given enough time to practice counting fibers by phase contrast microscopy.
