This Asbestos Building Inspector Initial training course accredits individuals to assess the condition of asbestos material and report the results. Any person who performs the tasks involved in the asbestos survey, identification and assessment of the condition of asbestos and asbestos material, or who is involved in the collection of bulk samples of asbestos material for laboratory analysis, needs this training.

Training for asbestos abatement professionals is required under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA), which is the authority under which EPA issued the EPA Asbestos Model Accreditation Plan. This course has been granted full approval by the EPA and various States to meet AHERA and ASHARA accreditation requirements for asbestos work in K-12 schools, as well as in public and commercial buildings.

OSHA requires that all surfacing material - (i.e. sprayed-on or trowled-on materials) and all thermal systems insulation must be presumed to be asbestos containing materials (PACM) in buildings constructed before 1981. OSHA also requires that in these same buildings, all vinyl, resilient, and asphaltic flooring, and the associated mastics and backings must be assumed to be asbestos containing. Only laboratory analysis of samples obtained by a trained and certified asbestos building inspector can rebut OSHAs position on PACM or flooring in buildings constructed before 1981. Building owners, and those involved with construction activities, must identify all asbestos containing materials in the areas of construction via due diligence.

An Asbestos Inspector must possess a valid Inspector certificate and have a copy of their certificate with them at all times while working on the project. This workshop prepares you to immediately apply your knowledge to the field, with extensive hands-on training and real-world examples from experienced instructors. It combines lectures, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations.

Topics To Be Covered Include:

  • Types and Uses of Asbestos
  • Potential Health Effects of Asbestos Exposure

I felt it coud have had a more hands on approach for the live "inspection process" for the new person is new to the whole process. But an actual field visit to a live building would educate the student much quicker and the thought process would sink in to learn. Also, the covered material needs to be discussed in more comprhensive detail to enusre the concepts and information are truly understood

The instructors, especially Jeff who was with us for two days was just a wealth of knowledge and he shared with us his experiences working in field as an asbestos inspector, what to expect on the job, what to do and what not to do. I think that he is a true pioneer in the asbestos inspection business in Chicago area and I am really glad I was able to learn from him. I would also like to comment on Mark, our third day instructor who did a great job reviewing the material with us. It was a little intimidating at first to get called out for an answer, but that made me really think about what I have learned in the past three days and it was actually very helpful on the day of the test. I also found the hands on practical exercises very helpful. Handling the sampling tools and doing a mock sampling showed me the difference between different materials I will be sampling and the different techniques used for each.
