This Asbestos Building Inspector Initial training course accredits individuals to assess the condition of asbestos material and report the results. Any person who performs the tasks involved in the asbestos survey, identification and assessment of the condition of asbestos and asbestos material, or who is involved in the collection of bulk samples of asbestos material for laboratory analysis, needs this training.

Training for asbestos abatement professionals is required under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA), which is the authority under which EPA issued the EPA Asbestos Model Accreditation Plan. This course has been granted full approval by the EPA and various States to meet AHERA and ASHARA accreditation requirements for asbestos work in K-12 schools, as well as in public and commercial buildings.

OSHA requires that all surfacing material - (i.e. sprayed-on or trowled-on materials) and all thermal systems insulation must be presumed to be asbestos containing materials (PACM) in buildings constructed before 1981. OSHA also requires that in these same buildings, all vinyl, resilient, and asphaltic flooring, and the associated mastics and backings must be assumed to be asbestos containing. Only laboratory analysis of samples obtained by a trained and certified asbestos building inspector can rebut OSHAs position on PACM or flooring in buildings constructed before 1981. Building owners, and those involved with construction activities, must identify all asbestos containing materials in the areas of construction via due diligence.

An Asbestos Inspector must possess a valid Inspector certificate and have a copy of their certificate with them at all times while working on the project. This workshop prepares you to immediately apply your knowledge to the field, with extensive hands-on training and real-world examples from experienced instructors. It combines lectures, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations.

Topics To Be Covered Include:

  • Types and Uses of Asbestos
  • Potential Health Effects of Asbestos Exposure
  • Federal and State Regulatory Framework
  • Function, Qualifications, and Role of Inspectors
  • Building Systems
  • Public/Employee/Building Occupant Relations
  • Pre-Inspection Planning
  • Physical Assessment of Friable and Non-Friable ACM
  • Respiratory Protection and Personal Protective Equipment
  • Legal Liabilities
  • Bulk Sampling Documentation and Recordkeeping
  • Field Experiences and Hands-On Skill Sets

Please Note: Your state has detailed education, experience and application processing requirements to qualify for licensing in the Asbestos field. Most states administer their own asbestos programs, and each state's Department of Environmental Protection/Health is generally the best place to start with questions about requirements and training. Students are responsible to verify these requirements prior to registering for a course.

He took to the time to explain certain concepts in extreme detail and was quick to answer any questions that the students had. He didn't cut corners and he made sure we all left the class with the knowledge needed in order to be successful in the field. I would recommend ATC and this instructor instructor to anyone interested in taking an Asbestos Inspector course.
