11-19-2021 - 8-Hour NIOSH 582e - Extension - Denver, CO

This 8-hour NIOSH 582e (Extension) course provides students an extra day dedicated to microscopy, and is to be added on to the end of an initial AMS training course. This additional day of training is intended to be combined with topics already taught in the Air Monitoring Specialist (AMS) course to provide students with adequate and in-depth knowledge.

This training is targeted toward individuals that may be performing onsite PCM analysis in remote locations away from established laboratories. Upon successful completion of class and exam, students will earn a course completion certificate.

Who Should Take this NIOSH 582e (Extension) Course?

• AMS students who may perform onsite PCM analysis

Topics to be Covered:

• Introduction to fiber counting
• Review of PCM formulas
• Microscope set-up and calibration
• Lab set-up
• Slide Mounting
• Practice counting on PAT slides
• QA/QC and Record Keeping

Suggested Materials
Course registration includes a student manual, writing pad, pen and highlighter and other course materials. This training provider recommends students to bring their own of the following if they have them:

• Phase-contrast microscope (resolution of 25 µm or better; green or blue positive phase contrast filter)
• Walton Beckett graticule (MUST be specific to microscope)
• Ocular (for making sure phase rings are in alignment)
• HSE/NPL Calibration test slide (for checking microscope's resolution)
• Graticule calibration slide (for checking graticule calibration)
• Acetone Vaporizer (for heating acetone during preparation of sample slides)

Note: Students must have an Air Monitoring Specialist Certification or be enrolled in an AMS course to register for this NIOSH 582e (Extension) Course.
